UWS provide a distinctive educational experience to 18,000 across our four campuses in Scotland and via our virtual learning environment, through a range of vocationally related courses, supported by our strong applied research and knowledge transfer activities. The University encourages and develops research activity across a wide range of disciplines and is widely recognised for its high quality work in subjects ranging from accountancy and European studies to environmental research and physics. The School of Social Sciences has approximately 42 academic staff and approaching 800 full-time equivalent students. Key strengths lie in: ·strong foundations in teaching and research in a range of social science disciplines that also interface in important ways with high quality vocational programmes ·a tradition of excellence in student support, attested to by Teaching Quality Assessment ratings of excellent in this aspect of our provision a growing research profile, particularly – but not exclusively – in applied or applicable research in health, social policy and related fields, drawing on the disciplines of psychology and sociology.
