Finnish Institute for Educational Research (FIER)

The Finnish Institute for Educational Research (FIER) is a separate institute of the University of Jyväskylä, itself an establishment with long educational traditions. It is a centre for educational research and evaluation in Finland. FIER is investigating, assessing and developing the Finnish educational system and school culture. Its research findings and its experts are a much-exploited resource in educational reforms covering the whole of the educational system from pre-school to higher education and to the links between vocational and academic education and working life. The FIER is both the international and the national coordinator of several international projects.

FIER is host of Finnish Centre for Lifelong Guidance Expertise which is equivalent to a multidisciplinary research and training unit that focuses specifically on career guidance issues. The centre focuses on the challenges identified in the council resolution of lifelong guidance adopted by the EU ministers of education in 2004 and also national educational and labour market policies. The goal is to strengthen the evidence base required to inform national and regional guidance policy development. The centre acts as a representative of the regional expertise when there is a need to respond to national and international challenges in guidance policy and practice. The Centre coordinates the European lifelong guidance policy network, ELGPN.

Guidance and Counselling Education & Research Unit/Department of Teacher Education

The unit provides education for school counsellors/study counsellors working at different contexts in the Finnish educational system. Education is organised in the form of two programmes: Work-based school counsellor education programme and Master?s programme based on guidance and counselling oriented education. A post-graduate programme on guidance and counselling issues has been established in 2003. The post-graduate studies cover a wide range of topical issues dealing with both educational institutions and other organisations. During the past years the unit has collaborated with University of Joensuu and University of Tampere in developing post-graduate studies. Furthermore, the unit has been actively involved in planning and providing in-service training for school counsellors and other people working in guidance and counselling related activities. The following two areas are important fields of research in our unit:

  • Guidance and counselling in higher education
  • Multicultural guidance and counselling

We are also interested in working life guidance and counselling and theoretical and Philosophical issues in guidance and counselling.
